5 Tips Every Parent Should Know for Test Day

Friday April 30th, 2010
Elementary school and middle school students in New York, California and across the country are finishing up this year’s state tests next week. We all know that testing can be a stressful event for anyone – all the more so for young students. Here are 5 Kaplan Keys to Test Success help ease pressure and get your child feeling more confident on test day:

  1. Night Before: No studying! Have your child do something relaxing to take her mind off of the upcoming test. This will help reduce stress and anxiety before bed time for a good night’s sleep.

  2. Start a Little Early: Help to make sure your child wakes up early enough to not feel rushed getting ready and getting to school. Also get to school early enough that he won’t have to scramble to be in his seat when the bell rings.

  3. Serve Good Breakfast: Make sure your child eats a filling breakfast to have energy for taking the test, but don’t stray too far from your usual routine. A bursting belly can make your child feel sick or lose concentration.

  4. Be Positive & Supportive: Help build your child’s confidence by staying positive and reassuring the morning of the test – even if your child is feeling grumpy. If he is argumentative, do your best not to engage. Remember, this is his day to shine!

  5. Last-Minute Confidence: Tests are an everyday part of students’ lives to help us get a picture of what kids understand really well and what could use some extra work. Help your child think of this test as one more way to show off what she knows.
